IELTS Writing Test 06/09/2014

Topic: As major cities in the world are growing today, so do their problems. What are problems for young people who are living in the cities as the result of continued growth? How problems might be solved?

Essay 1:
Nowadays, city life has brought people so many comforts that rural life cannot offer. However, coming with such benefits are also setbacks that potentially affect young urban residents’ health to great extent. This essay will focus on discussing these issues and suggesting feasible solutions to this dilemma.
First of all, the often-hectic lifestyles and increasing youth unemployment in the cities are more likely to cause both mental and physical health of young adults to deteriorate. More than ever, modern society is witnessing striking increase in the number of people diagnosed with stress, anxiety disorders or depression. Another trouble that may spring from those mental illnesses is the tendency to overuse addictive substance to release social pressure. This could be a trigger to a much bigger matter involving illegal activities, which would threaten the society’s safety generally. Not only do young city dwellers lead a more intense life, they also lead a more sedentary lifestyle. A rising rate of adolescent obesity is a clear example of the result of urban non-active lifestyle.
The question as to how to tackle all the aforementioned problems is still a conundrum to many governments. It is suggested that in order to improve the mental health of adolescents, young people should be educated about how to maintain a good state of mental health. Teachers and parents should also be invited to give thorough career guidance to their students and children to help them avoid unnecessary shock or stress from getting a job after graduation. Moreover, governments have now joined forces with non-profit organisations and activists to promote the benefits of physical exercise, which will hopefully see more teenagers in metropolitan areas getting engaged in active lifestyles.
In conclusion, it is fair to say that there will not be a single best solution to the issues encountered by young people living in the city. However, by advocating active lifestyles and educating young people about the importance of stable mental health, the governments will be likely to alleviate the problems in long term.
