Topic: Should gun ownership can be approved ?

In recent years, some countries, mostly developed ones, have approved their citizens of possessing guns or other kinds of weapon for safety purposes. Although carrying firearms provides people with better self-protection, I do disagree with this action for some reasons.

On the one hand, it is clear that gun ownership is worth supporting to some extent. As can be seen, with a gun in hand, even an ordinary inhabitant is able to self-defense and, furthermore, deter criminals when being pushed into some certain dangerous situations. For example, a group of people who are robbed on the train back home from their workplaces can guarantee their survival and manage to safely escape if each of them is capable of making the best of a portable weapon. As a result, the crime rate in cities allowing firearms possession is likely to reduce in long-term because threatening people is not as easy for wrongdoers as it was before.

On the other hand, protestants’ opinions toward this issue are also considerable. Firstly, it is possible that the number of accidents occurring on the street is expected to increase, as firearms are not always under people’s control. We cannot turn a blind eye to the fact that if a gun is suddenly triggered in a road corner, since its owner does not pay enough attention to the weapon he carries, a life may be lost. Secondly, murder rate and suicide rate are predicted to surge. It is flagrant that people armed with guns are able to kill each other in only one second of losing temper; or a high school student, for example, can put his life to an end easily and immediately at a moment of depression.

In my opinion, people do not need to possess a gun to protect themselves. Because of the high possibility of accidents, it is believed that people should be banned from owning a weapon. The mission of the police force is to guarantee their citizens’ safety; therefore, allowing these professionals to complete their job is a better idea than turning every person into one of them.
