IELTS Writing Task 2 Sample Essay 1

Topic: advantages and disadvantages of zoos.

Nowadays, natural habitat has been seriously threatened and appearance of zoo is a way to protect animals better but it also has sparked many different opinions. As every coin has two sides, this scenario surely carries along with it both benefits and drawbacks, both of which will be mentioned in subsequent paragraphs.

On the one hand, this problem holds some positive features. Firstly, it is an indisputable fact that zoo plays an important role in wildlife conservation. Animals are taken care of best condition which helps them maintain the survival of species. Secondly, it’s also flagrant that zoo creates opportunities to develop science and education. Scientists can study about lifestyle, behaviors of animals to serve their researches. With children, watching animals not only interests them, but also builds biological foundation knowledge. Besides, a large workload in zoo requires many human resources so it provides occupations for people.

On the other hand, we cannot ignore the minus points of this issue. It is firmly believed that making money and entertaining by using animals are unethical. Indeed, animals also have the right like human beings, while there are many alternative ways to protect them, people choose stealing their freedom. Furthermore, it is clear that keeping animals in limited spaces and artificial environment are worth worrying. Additionally, being nurtured too carefully forces them to be dependent on people and gradually lose their wild instinct. As an illustration, tiger is a predator, if people feed them every day while they doesn’t need to hunt, they will not know how to become a real predator, they will just be pets.

In conclusion, the two side of the coin have been discussed and they seem to be equal. However, personally, I support the latter because of one reason that animals have the right to live in freedom. I think, in coming years, governments will find out the other way to protect animals such as devoting more attention to natural habitat.
